Los Angeles to Morro Bay & a Whale of an Experience

Adios L.A. - Hello Morro Bay! As much fun as people may find the Los Angeles area, it's not really my scene. I'm more low key, prefer the beautiful ocean to concrete freeways, and love breathing fresh air.

I've never spent any time in the Morro Bay area so I had no idea what to expect. I stopped by the real estate office to pick up the key to my VRBO (vacation rental by owner). I immediately fell in love with a little shop across the street called Beads by the Bay with a charming little 'secret garden' in the back. Most definitely will pay a more extensive visit to that cute little store!

I drove toward the water and this was my first view, from Embarcadero street.

Morro Rock

Then I drove down Main Street, which parallels Highway 1, which parallels the Pacific Ocean, to Jamaica Street and found my home for the next three nights. Oh My Gosh! I fell in love with it the minute I walked inside. I could live here!!

The main living area - completely beachy

The kitchen

A little loft cubby off the dining area. Too cute!

My room . . .

. . . or maybe this one!

My front door and little patio area. LOVE!

Had dinner at the Harbor Hut and this was the view from my window seat. I watched seals and pelicans in the bay while I ate the most delicious grilled prawns and scallops with rice pilaf and delicious veggies, all sitting on the most delicious orange-ginger sauce. SO GOOD!

The view from the other window I could see from my little restaurant table.

My server was really helpful with good information about the area. I asked her if I could drive around Morro Rock and she told me the best side to drive on. I asked her if the whale watching tours were having much luck and she said there have been dozens of humpback whales directly west from the bay. So after dinner I took a little drive around the Rock.

Looking back at Morro Bay from Morro Rock

If you look very, very closely towards the horizon, you can see whale spouts!

I climbed up the jetty rocks (with the help of some strangers) and watched an amazing spectacle of at least eight humpback whales way out on the horizon. I couldn't get pictures because of just having a little phone camera, but I saw things I've never seen my Orca whales do. Not only did I see spouts, but quite often a large black fin would come out of the water and slap the water. You know how big it was if I could see it from the rocks! It just kept happening over and over and over. I was mesmerized. They must have been HUGE! It totally makes me want to take a whale watching tour just to get closer.

I stayed out on the jetty until the sun was completely set and it looked like the whale action had calmed down . . . for now.

No lighthouse here, but a fog signal is at the end of the jetty and I love that sound!
